THE CARRIAGE

The Netherlands, Indonesia and Mexico 2007-2008

The Carriage. What’s the load on the carriage? Who are the ones that travel in it and where does it go?
Some years ago, my Dutch filmmaker friend Kees Hin came to visit me in Mexico City. Since we started working together more than ten years ago, I have felt his naughty-spicy personality in daily life as well as in his way of making film.

Kees told me once that when he was a child his father taught him to stop believing in the Devil and that the Devil had left, but now he wanted to know more about it. Maybe that’s why during his stay in Mexico, he was so intrigued by the variety of devil figures made by Mexican craftsmen and he asked me to find one to take back home with him to Amsterdam.

Kees’s fascination for the devil and my curiosity triggered in us the need to make a journey and a film. A journey through different cities, towns and landscapes. The Netherlands, Indonesia and Mexico connected through a series of special meetings between Kees and some friends of us, relatives, neighbours, acquaintances and people we met on the road. A passage through people’s thoughts, stories, fantasies, fears and lusts.
